Spiral Beach

Date:  Oct. 18, 2007
Venue:  Hart House

If the crowd at Spiral Beach’s free show at the Hart House last week is any indication, then I’m getting old.

Playing in a glorified cafeteria on the University of Toronto campus, the band took to the stage at around 9:30, dishing out an hour long set for an audience that I couldn’t believe were allowed out that late, let alone fulfilling post-secondary studies. Of course, one listen to Spiral Beach’s sophomore release, Ball, and there’s no question that the band exudes energy and youth befitting their supporters (not to mention my geriatric jealousy).

Opening the set with the crashing sound of a large chain being dropped repeatedly on the floor as the smoke machine gradually suffocated the sanity in the room, the band wasted no time getting right into their special blend of chaotic art-rock (complete with the 1988 film Alice as a projected backdrop throughout the show). Choice cuts from Ball, like the infectious and groovy “Made of Stone” and the addictively riotous “Kind of Beast” sent the crowd into a frenzy while also proving Spiral Beach to be on top of their game.

Youthful, energetic and living up to the hype at every turn, Spiral Beach also exhibit poise and experience on stage that belies their age. These kids are cocky, cocksure and confident—a perfect formula for world domination, and if they are able to communicate that exuberance on disc (which Ball comes close to achieving) then there’s no question that old fogies like me will have no choice but to bow down.

Those of you looking for a chance to check them out for yourselves, the band advised that they won’t hold it against anyone who doesn’t want to shell out the dough to see them open for The Go! Team at the Phoenix on Nov. 1, but promised they’ll be playing an as yet advertised gig in Toronto on Dec. 1 (no mention of what venue just yet). Though it might be worth a small road-trip to catch Spiral Beach with the inimitable Wax Mannequin (a live review for whom can be read here) in Hamilton on Nov. 11—what a pairing! You drive and I’ll pay for gas and slurpees!

Here are some photos from the show–though a combination of poor lighting, smoke and general ineptitude on my part made for less than ideal conditions:

While you’re at it, why not listen to a track from Ball here (to download right-click, “Save Link As”):
