2007 Year in Review: My Favourite Covers
Inspired by Pitchfork’s 20 Worst Covers of 2007, but not wanting to steal their shtick, I decided to take a look at my favourite covers of the year. Consider this a superficial take on things before I finally prepare my list of top albums (which is coming soon, I promise).
Thus, completely subjective and bias, with no real criteria aside from what I thought was pleasing to the eye, here are a few of my favourite covers of 2007:
—
Andre Ethier - On Blue Fog (Blue Fog)

This is just a fantastic portrait. It takes the confidence inherent in Ethier’s delivery and puts it front and centre.
—
Hrsta - Ghosts Will Come and Kiss Our Eyes (Constellation)

An engaging photograph that catches my eye every time.
—
Nifty - A Sparrow! A Sparrow! (Blocks Recording Club)

This one grabbed my attention immediately. Simple design with a small, but effective colour palette—Just looking at this image made me want to like this album.
—
Vic Chesnutt - North Star Deserter (Constellation)

A great image, with understated text and the perfect monochromatic wash to evoke Chesnutt’s somber glory.
—
Nathan Lawr & the Minotaur Orchestra - A Sea of Tiny Lights (Saved By Radio)

A bit of an outcast among the others, as it’s definitely the busiest image, the subdued colour scheme and nearly seamless integration of photographic and drawn elements made it a cover that I couldn’t help but love the moment I saw it.

There you have it: 5 covers I really enjoyed this year.
